NCLR, GALEO to Host Telephonic Briefing on GA’s Latino Voters, Nonpartisan Get-Out-The-Vote Efforts

Growing electorate poised to impact upcoming midterm elections

ATLANTA—On Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. EDT, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) and GALEO (Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials) will be joined by Matt Barreto, Principal and Co-Founder of Latino Decisions, one of the nation’s top Latino polling firms, on a telephonic briefing for reporters to highlight the growing influence of the Hispanic electorate in the Peach State and its potential impact on the upcoming midterm elections. 

The number of registered Hispanic voters in Georgia grew from 26,000 in 2000 to 140,000 in 2012, a whopping 438 percent increase. Latinos current represent 4 percent of the state’s eligible electorate; while that percentage may not seem significant, the candidates in the state’s gubernatorial race are separated by less than two percentage points. Even tighter is the race for U.S. Senate, where candidates hold less than a one-percentage-point difference among likely voters. With these razor-thin margins, Latinos are poised to impact electoral outcomes.

NCLR and GALEO have launched nonpartisan get-out-the-vote efforts in the weeks leading up to Election Day to encourage Hispanic voters to turn out. The efforts are targeted at Hispanic drop-off voters—those who tend to only vote during presidential election years. This outreach involves phone, direct mail and canvassing efforts.
